MSU Health Care, often referred to as HCI for Health Care, Inc., is the professional academic medical practice for MSU faculty in the Colleges of Human Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, and Nursing. The HCI Leadership and Human Resources teams have been active in advancing the success of all team members and the organization in part through a series of new and revised programs for staff. Kathleen Fox, Human Resources Manager for HCI stated that, “many of the programs we are developing are to truly focus on our team’s hard work and demonstrate how much we value them.”

HCI Human Resources created an empowering and manageable New Employee Orientation program. To ensure all new employees receive a good first impression, all new support staff attend both HCI and University Human Resources sessions in their first three days of employment prior to starting in their units to ensure a strong foundation through the completion of all required training and educational sessions.

Employees in HCI are being recognized for outstanding efforts through three core programs starting with the “Vision Voucher” program to provide individuals and groups with timely shout-outs and recognition for above and beyond efforts. Additionally, they have developed a longevity effort to recognize every five years of service to HCI with a recognition gift and announcement in the newsletter. And finally, the AEEHC (pronounced ‘ace’) Award – Acknowledge Exemplary Employee in Health Care – is based on outstanding qualities and contributions of employees towards unit goals and HCI’s mission. It recognizes exemplary behaviors that are not normally part of an employee’s responsibilities and/or ordinary tasks done in extraordinarily AEEHC fashion.

And for continuing staff, the HCI Leadership Academy focuses on developing supervisors’ role and key performance objectives for running a department or health care clinic and elements on supervising a team for stronger outcomes. This three-session program is spread across three days at the beginning of the semester and addresses constructs of organizational change and transformation, leadership styles, inclusive environment development, and organizational improvement. Fox added, “I am very excited about our own Leadership Academy program as it offers participants a new sense of focus and direction.”

These highlighted programs are just the beginning for the staff success efforts planned in the coming years for MSU Health Care as part of a system-wide effort to create a highly skilled and professional workforce and an exceptional work environment.
